Undercover
Quilts presents original art quilts by Mary Downes.
Mary Downes was born and raised in Hawaii.
Frustrated with the precision needed for patchwork quilting,
Mary started making Hawaiian quilts 20 years ago. There were
many long distance calls to Kailua as she slowly learned the art
from her mother, who in turn was studying under the late
renowned quilter Mealii Kalama. Her deep cultural and familial
roots in Hawaii and her appreciation for the natural world have
influenced both her Hawaiian and machine quilts. Bright colors
are often coupled with a sense of humor. Mary's first quilt, a
hand-stitched Hawaiian pattern, was showcased at Undercover
Quilts in downtown Seattle. Thanks to this exposure, her quilts
hang in collections across the United States, Europe and the
Middle East. Mary's latest work, the hand painted topographical
maps, further exhibit her extraordinary imagination and
interpretation of textile art.
